Fast Digs: Los Angeles Agricultural Park, 1893

Another photo from the 3 October 1893 2 mile race at the Los Angeles Agricultural Park. This one shows all the competing riders on the start line. The Los Angeles Wheelmen (clearly identified by their white kit with the black diamond), East Side Cycling Club, and the Riverside Wheelmen, wearing yellow (if you can tell) were represented in this race.

An earlier post of the racing at the Agricultural Park can be found here, and to fill out some of the information there: Today's Exposition Park began life in 1872 when a 160 acre tract of land, located just outside the city limits, was purchased by the Southern District Agricultural Society to be used as a fairground and exhibition area promoting local agriculture. The agricultural component of the park fell into decline rather quickly yet a second component, sports, taking place on the race track shown above, as well as a football field, thrived. Unfortunately gambling and prostitution accompanied the sporting events, compelling the city to annex the land in1899. The state took over in 1908, and on 6 November 1913 it was reopened as Exposition Park.
